1. What's the longest distance you've had to commute? Was it worth it? Believe it or not. I've only had one full time job in my lifetime, the one I hold now. My office is located a mere five miles fom my home. When I was first hired, I had to do three days of training in Pittsburgh, an approximately thirty mile commute. Another time, I traveled about fifty miles for three days of QWL training (a union related workshop). Hell, yeah, it was worth it. I was reimbursed for the additional travel expenses, got paid overtime for the time in the training sessions, and I got to get a break from the hum-drum, day to day routine of my job.
2. If you have a commute, what mode of transportation do you use? What do you do during it? I go to work in my "creepy little car", an old Pontiac Sunbird. The five mile commute takes between ten and twenty minutes, depending on weather and traffic conditions. I spend that time with the car stereo turned all the way up. What's playing? The Scorpions, of course!
3. How important is commute distance when choosing a job? Very important! I am not a morning person. I don't want to have to spend long periods of time travelling to work if I have to start at seven or eight in the morning. I might be willing to travel farther if my job had hours that started later in the day.
Bonus Question for Comments: What do you think of carpooling? Does it work? Why/Why not? In theory, carpooling is a great idea. In reality, it is much too difficult to make it work. You need to have several people who live and work near each other who also work approximately the same hours. These conditions are a bit too difficult to meet in a small town such as mine.
