Everyone has different reactions to different situations. So, what
would you do if you came upon the following...
1. A person obviously struggling to keep her head above water in a pool or lake. I'm not much of a swimmer, so jumping in to rescue her would be out of the question. There would then be two of us struggling. What I would do would vary depending on the exact location. Since most pools have a lifeguard, I would bring the situation to his attention. In a location where no lifeguard is present, I would search for something large and buoyant to throw to the victim to use to float herself to safety.
2. You find a $100 bill on the floor in a store. I've never found quite that much money lying around, but I did once find a couple of twenties on the ground outside a local convenience store. This is what I did in that situation. I asked the cashiers if anyone had inquired about some lost cash and checked with the people in the store to see if anyone had lost any money. When their replies were all negative, I was able to pocket the cash without a guilty conscience. If someone had said that they had lost the two twenties, I would have returned it. I am basically an honest person.
3. You find a dog or cat with a broken leash wandering aimlessly in your
neighborhood. This situation has arisen quite frequently where I live. Usually such an animal is followed shortly thereafter by a frantic owner. I usually try to get the animal to come to me so that I can check its tags and keep it in safety until its owner arrives.
4. A person you don't know knocks on your door in the middle of the
night claiming he has an emergency situation and wants to use your
telephone. I would ask him what sort of assistance he needed and offer to make the necessary calls for him. Better safe than sorry, but I wouldn't want to refuse assistance completely in case it was a real emergency.
5. You see a car veer off the road and into the ditch. Calling 9-1-1 from my cell phone would seem to be the logical course of action.
