There is a new show on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. It is called American Dad. It is the tale of CIA agent, Stan Smith, his wife, Francine, and their children, Hayley and Steve. The family also icludes an alien named Roger who Stan rescued from the infamous Area 51. Poor Roger has issues with the fact that he cannot leave the house. I can't imagine why!
The show follows standard sitcom guidelines. Stan is "Mr. Macho", Francine is a typical housewife who ALWAYS knows better than her husband what is good for him, Hayley is an eighteen year old ultra left winger, and Steve is a thirteen year old nerd. No sense arguing with what the folks at Neillson claim works from the producers of this show. And it does work. The show is rather amusing, save for one thing, the family pet!
Klaus is a lascivious German-speaking goldfish, the result of a CIA experiment gone wrong, who has a rather unhealthy crush on Francine.
Following is a bit of dialog between Roger and Klaus which was part of the last episode that I saw...
Klaus: "Was that potato salad good, Roger?"
Roger: "Mmmmm... Delicious!"
Klaus: "That was Francine's potato salad for the wake tomorrow. You ate it all!"
Roger: "Oh, no! If I don't make more, Francine is going to kill me. You set me up!"
Klaus (chuckling): "I'm German. We do that."
GRRRRRR! I find that dialog to be extremely offensive and not funny in the least. World War II has been over for more than sixty years. Let's give the German Nazi stereotype a rest, hell, let's lose it all together. Haven't those people had to hang their heads in shame over that long enough? Must we rehash it in a freaking GOLDFISH! Certainly there must have been a better way to write the dialog for that scene.
