Today our nation said its final farewell to one of the most influential leaders it has had in recent years, Ronald Reagan.
Elected president for his first term in 1980, the very first election in which I was able to vote, Mr. Reagan's policies and personality were one of the greatest influences on not only our nation, but the entire world. It was during his presidency that the long bloodless "cold war" came to an end. One of his most famous quotes can easily be associated with this event.
"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall!''
Originally an actor in films such as Bedtime For Bonzo, he played his greatest role as president of The United States with dignity and finesse. Even when the Iran-Contra scandal threatened his reputation, he was able to rise above it, apologizing for his actions concerning the incident. That was just the kind of man that he was.
And so with a tear in my eye, I conclude this tribute to the late President Reagan. May he rest in peace and love with the God of his understanding.
