Strange Weather We're Having

The thermometer doesn't seem to know that it's January, at least every other day. One day we'll have temperatures in the 50s, the next day they will be in the 20s or 30s. I don't know what to expect from the weather each day. It would seem that even the plant life is confused by the strange weather that we're having. Just look at what I spotted growing beneath a mailbox this morning!

I hope this poor little pansy fared okay through the morning's sleet and snow flurries.

Monday Madness

Have you ever played the A-Z game? The first person has to start with the letter A and name something that is related to the topic, the next player has to repeat the A-word, PLUS one beginning with the letter B, and so on, and so on.

Using the letters of the alphabet in order, name as many words as you can that have something to do with the town or state where you live or work...

Since the little hole in the wall where I live is a suburb of Pittsburgh...

A Allegheny county, Allegheny General Hospital, A J Palumbo Center

B Ben Roethlisberger, Benedum Center, (The) Bus AKA Jerome Bettis, Bessemer Court, Bill Cowher, bridges

C Carnegie Mellon University, Carnegie Science Center, Civic Light Opera, Century III Mall, Carson Street

D Duquesne University, detours

E endless road construction

F Fifth Avenue, Forbes Avenue, Forbes Field (Pirates stadium of my childhood, now long gone)

The I-Dog Says...

"I am a hungry little pup! You will be changing my batteries more often than you change your socks. Perhaps you should consider buying some of those rechargeable alkaline batteries for me."

"I have but a single small speaker, so my sound output isn't that great, but it beats the hell out of four hours of silence. On the plus side, I can play music from any device that has a small standard headphone jack."

"I'm a hot property. You're lucky to have me. I went into hiding several weeks before Christmas. At that time my price was a mere twenty dollars ay Wal-Mart. I came out of hiding this week, just for you, but you're gonna have to pay the price. Wal-Mart now sells me for twenty-eight bucks. Hey, everybody wants me!"

It's time to recap my weekend once again!

10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back.
(oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)

Due to my purchase of an i-dog, this weekend was all about The Scorpions for me! I even burned a new mixed Scorpions CD for my new pet to play for me...

1. Always Somewhere
2. Catch Your Train
3. When The Smoke Is Going Down
4. White Dove
5. Falling In Love
6. Mysterious
7. Soul Behind The Face
8. Edge Of Time
9. Moment Of Glory
10. Is There Anybody There

Of course, all of these songs are by The Scorpions and appear on my newly burned "Treasures" CD along with a few of their other not so well known songs.

And now for the picture...

Since today was son Michael's fourteenth birthday, I thought that this picture was quite appropriate.

Behold The I-Dog!

Meet my new i-dog! I've been wanting one for quite a while, but last night was the first time since before Christmas that I saw one availble in a store. Of course, as soon as I saw him, I knew that he had to come home with me!

My new i-dog has been a great joy for me. Since he can be used as an external speaker for devices like MP3 plyers, I was finally able to take my music with me on my route.Four hours on the road delivering mail goes b so much faster with my newfound friend sitting on the dash, playing The Scorpions for me!

Top Five On Friday

Top 5 "Classic Rock" Bands
(and your favorite song by each if you feel so disposed)

To create this list, I feel that I need to define what I believe to be a classic rock band. To me this means the bands who were popular in my childhood and teenaged years, the 60s and 70s...

1. The Beatles

An obvious choice.
Favorite song: Here Comes The Sun

2. The Moody Blues

Well, duh... of course these guys make the list!
Favorite song: Your Wildest Dreams

3. The Monkees

How could anyone NOT love the Pre-Fab Four?!
Favorite song: Daydream Believer

4. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

I don't have a picture of all four of them, so you'll have to settle for just Neil!
Favorite song: Ohio

5. The Beach Boys

How could I not love a band with an album called Endless Summer?
Favorite song: Fun, Fun, Fun

This is a little "getting to know you" type of meme. The thirteen is entirely your own choice. If you decide to play along, please leave me a comment. I'd like to get to know YOU!

My choice for this week's Thursday Thirteen is...

1. "The Estranged One" - I wish that I could call him my ex-husband, but no, he refuses to agree to a divorce.

2. Don Frank - My immediate supervisor at work. Need I say more?

3. The Moody Bitch - My favorite blogstalker

4. Raymond - Number One Son. Let's face it. Our children live to annoy us!

5. Michael - Number Two Son. See reason given above.

6. Bob Anderson - This guy never knows when to quit. Dammit, his teasing isn't funny anymore...

7. Jack Sproul - It seems that this man gets paid for drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes all day...

8. Tracy Kennedy - The princess of the post office

9. Cat Woman - The Polish Princess who thinks that she is so much better than me.

10. Wild Thing - The other Polish Princess who likes to fight her friend's battles

11. Pam - She's one of my best friends, and I love her dearly, but sometimes I think that she lives to annoy me!

12. Grandma - I'm afraid that I can never be the genteel lady that my dear 90+ year old grandmother wants me to be. Nor can I ever satisfy for desire for neatness..

13. Jim Yocolano - My favorite pain in the ass! He lives lass than a block away from his parents, but always drves there and parks right in front of their mailbox!!!

Check out these other Thursday Thirteen players...

Are You An Alien?

According to this certificate, my blog has once more been transmitted into space.

So, if you are an alien, please leave me a comment to let me know that you have read this. I will subsequently take you to my leader...

Perhaps you can assist me and my fellow Americans by abducting him and having him anally probed. Be assured that this freak does NOT represent the average humanoid on this planet, most of us are much smarter and better looking.

It's time for the weekly photo meme from the folks at Foto Pherrets.

I had to take an unexpected day away from my job today, which gave me the idea for this week's word:

This interesting display is along the driveway of one of my postal customers. Not only did I see it while I was at work, I bet it took a lot of work to put it together!

It's time to recap my weekend once again!

10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back.
(oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)

This weekend is definitely about the Pittsburgh Steelers and the play-off game that I am deserately trying not to watch. I don't want to curse them, so the Media player is turned up to full volume on random play, all music. This makes for a REALLY odd mix of music, considering my varied musical taste...

1. Headless Cross - Black Sabbath
2. I'd Have You Anytime - George Harrison
3. Tough Enough - Vanilla Ninja
4. Don't Shoot Shotgun - Def Leppard
5. Steppin' In A Slide Zone - The Moody Blues
6. Follow Me - Paul McCartney
7. Night Flight - Justin Hayward
8. I Wanted To Cry (But The Tears Wouldn't Come) - The The Scorpions
9. Easy Come, Easy Go - Winger
10. Hollywood - Nickelback

The current game score is 24 - 3 with Pittsburgh in the lead (Third Quarter).

And now for the picture...

Yep, it's all about the Steelers this weekend!

So, You've Got Steeler Fever...

What do you do when you've got Steeler Fever, but you don't have lots of money to spend on showing your support for the home team?
These folks on my route have come up with some very clever ideas...

Why take down that lighted snowman that you put on your lawn for Christmas when you can deck him out in a terrible towel and other Steeler paraphenelia? He's a great way to display your Pittsburgh pride!

If you don't have a snowman on your lawn, or a terrible towel for him to wear, all hope is not lost.

Black and gold balloons are inexpensive. Strung along your fenceline, they're a cheap and easy way to let everybody know who you're rooting for in tomorrow's AFC Championship game! Of course, you'll need to have someone in your household who is full of hot air!

Go Steelers!

If I have to see this man cry again this year, I want it to be tears of joy over his team's Super Bowl victory!

Friday, January 20, 2006

A Steelers Prayer

Following The Steelers victory in a real nailbiter of a play-off game on Sunday, Steeler Fever has begun to run rampant in this area. Flags like this one can be seen flying with as much frequency as Old Glory!

And if you listen very carefully, the following prayer can be heard rising up to the heavens:

"Our Father, who art in Pittsburgh
Football be thy name.
Thy kingdom come
Four Super Bowls they've won,
On earth as it is on Heinz field.
Give us this day a play-off victory,
And forgive us our penalties
As we defeat those who play against us.
And lead us into a victory,
And deliver us to Detroit."

"A - Ben!"

Top Five On Friday

Top Five "Pop" Songs
(And before you all start groaning, these don't have to be recent pop songs)

I don't think that any of my top five could even remotely be called recent....

1. Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles
2. You're The Inspiration - Chicago
3. Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John
4. Daydream Believer - The Monkees
5. Take Me Home Country Roads - John Denver

A Boy Becomes A Man

What determines when a boy becomes a man? Society has set many different guidelines for this throughout the ages. Some of them are based on age, ritual, and other such nonsense. I have my own guidelines. They are based on the commission of certain acts of "man behavior." Some examples of this would be:

Refusing to relinquish the television remote
A sudden inability to ask for or follow directions
Forgetting how to say the words "I'm sorry."

The other day, at the tender age of 13, my son, Mike, convinced me that he has in fact become a man. This is what happened.

I was driving him home from his Grandma's house when he said something to me that was so hurtful that at first I got mad as hell, then I just burst into tears. I remained sad and upset for the rest of the evening. Finally, Mike asked me what was wrong. I told him that what he had said to me in the car hurt my feelings much more than he could imagine. He looked at me strangely. I waited, and waited...
I am still waiting, several days later. No apology has come my way.

The boy has truly become a man!

There Must Be Something To Astrology

I've taken quizzes like this one before, ones that ask about your character traits, but not your birthdate. The results are always the same...

You Should Be A Scorpio

What's good about you: intense and energetic, you can easily transform the vibe of a room

What's bad about you: if someone rubs you the wrong way, you'll sting them!

In love: you experience very strong feelings - both passion and jealousy

In friendship, you're: likely to demand loyalty and dump friends who don't provide it

Your sense of fashion: revealing, daring outfits - you love taking fashion risks

You like to pig out on: spicy Thai, Mexican, or Indian food

What Sign Should You Be?

No big surprise here. With a birthdate of November 20, I am indeed a Scorpio...

Could there really be some truth in this astrology thing? It really does make me wonder.

Take Me Back Tuesday

Rain rain go away...

Name three songs that chase away the rainy day blahs.

1. Du Bist So Schmutzig - The Scorpions
2. Freshly Squeezed - The Scorpions
3. To Be No. 1 - The Scorpions

These three songs will not only chase away rainy day blahs for me, they'll chase away the anyday blahs! Also, looking over my list I discovered that all three songs were from the same album, Eye II Eye.

Name three artists that cheer you on a rainy day.

1. The Scorpions
2. Jimmy Buffett
3. Elton John

I'm certain that my #1 pick surprises no one.
The other two... They have so many fun songs in their discography, they've just got to make me smile!

Name three albums with sunny titles.

1. Face The Heat - The Scorpions (The sun gives off heat!)
2. Golden - Bernie Barlow (The sun is golden in color!)
3. Behind The Sun - Eric Clapton

National Holiday

I sit here at home being paid today because it is a national holiday, Dr, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This is a holiday that has come under attack by some people. Why? Because Dr. King was a man who called for freedom and equality for ALL people without regard to the color of their skin. It's hard to believe that there are still people out there who would object to such teachings, but there are far too many in my estimation. Of course, in my estimation, even one such person is too many.

Dr. King was a great man whose teachings touched the hearts and souls of many people, both black and white. His dream of a world in which all people could live in peace and harmony with one another was an admirable one, one to which we should all aspire to make come true. He did not advocate violence or wrongdoing. His life, his teachings, and all that he stood for make him a fine example of what a proud American should truly be, certainly a much better one than our current president.

How could anyone listen to or read these excerpts from his famous I Have A Dream speech and not be moved?

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed --- "We hold these these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, and rough places will be made plains, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

And if America is to be a great nation this must come true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California.

But not only that --- let freedom ring from Stone Mountain in Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual,

Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

Perhaps those who cannot accept his teachings find some fault in their own character. I for one, am a very white woman who would quite proudly call this man my brother.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., may your dream live on to inspire the hearts of my children, and their children...

Monday Madness

1. Before I walk out the door, I always check to make sure I have my car keys.
I probably wouldn't get very far without them!

2. I can't seem to catch up on my house cleaning.
A six day work week makes for a VERY messy house!

3. The one surface in my house that always seems to get cluttered fast is my computer desk.
People are always tossing things there to be certain that I see them. I wonder why...

4. If I sleep past noon, I feel that I've slept in too late.
That is, of course, on days when I am not working. On a work day I dare not sleep later than 6:30 AM!

5. No matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to convince "the estranged one" to agree to a friendly divorce.
I want my freedom, but not enough to do battle in a courtroom.

6. I hope to have my income taxes done by April 15.
I am a realist and a procrastinator!

7. This year I'd like to make more time for my songwriting.
I hadn't written anything for a long time, but when I wrote Baby Blue Eyes the creative juices started flowing again. I really need to get my new works polished and perfected.

It's time to recap my weekend once again!

10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back.
(oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)

It's been a rather interesting weekend for me musically. I discovered a great new band thanks to a friend, bought some new CDs, and watched a movie with a rather interesting soundtrack. Of course, old favorites are always along for the ride!

1. Destroyed By You - Vanilla Ninja
2. Monkey To Man - Elvis Costello
3. Ohio - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
4. Rockin' In The Free World - Neil Young
5. Welcome To Wherever You Are - Bon Jovi
6. Shout - The Isaly Brothers
7. In The Summertime - Mungo Jerry
8. Rock You Like A Hurricane - The Scorpions
9. Soul Behind The Face - The Scorpions
10. In Trance - The Scorpions

Song 1 is by the new group that I was introduced to this weekend. I just ordered their Traces Of Sadness CD. I can't wait until it arrives!
Song 2 was playing in the car during today's trek to the south hills.
Songs 3 - 5 are from the two CDs that I purchased this weekend, Neil Young's Greatest Hits and Bon Jovi's Have A Nice Day (a guilty pleasure of mine).
Songs 6 & 7 are from the soundtrack of the movie Wedding Crashers that I rented this weekend.
Songs 8 - 10 are those old favorites that I referred to, with song 8 making the list because I had shrimp at TGI Friday's... Remember those commercials?

And now for the picture...

Quite a while ago it was announced that The Scorpions would be releasing a DVD of a Vienna show from the 2004 Unbreakable tour. As is par for the course on their official website, a link was provided to order it from Amazon. I'm no fan of Amazon.com. I've never had any luck receiving anything that I order from them, and their prices are outrageous! I passed on ordering it there, deciding instead to save myself a few bucks on shipping and wait for it to be sold in stores. Months passed. I checked at Wal Mart, where I had previously purchased Savage Crazy World. There was no sign of the new DVD there. I looked in F. Y. E. and Suncoast where I saw only that Moment Of Glory was still available...

I began to wonder if this DVD really existed.

Today while checking on the status of a CD which I had recently ordered from CD Universe, I randomly decided to search for it there. Bingo! There it was! The catch, it has to be imported from Argentina! GRRRR! It was never released in the U. S., much like the Acoustica CD. Damn my fellow Americans for having taste for crap in music! Pop trash and other such musical garbage is released here in abundance, but an established band like the Scorps can't get released. That's just not right!

I'm making a trip to Borders tomorrow, where I'm told they have a decent stock of imported material. I hope that I find it there. If not, I suppose that the good folks at CD Universe will be getting a little bit more of my hard earned cash...

Friday The Thirteenth

I'm not superstitious. Really, I'm not! But there is just something about Friday the thirteenth that gives me the willies. I spend most of the day looking over my shoulder, waiting for something bad to happen.

While I was on my route today, I looked over my shoulder and this is what I saw...

A headless Santa Claus, how creepy!
I wonder, is he left over from Christmas or Halloween?

Oh, well, at least nothing bad happened to me today. It's a shame that I can't say the same for poor Santa.

Top Five On Friday

Top 5 "royal" songs.
(songs with kings, queens etc in the title)

1. Killer Queen - Queen
2. I Just Can't Wait To Be King - Elton John (from The Lion King soundtrack)
3. Queen Of Hearts - Juice Newton
4. Dancing Queen - ABBA
5. King Of The Road - Roger Miller

I'm So Tired...

I am sitting here sipping my coffeee, trying to stay awake until midnight so that I might buy an imported CD that I've been wanting as soon as my pay hits the bank. It is becoming more difficult to stay awake by the minute...

Why? Because my car needs an oil change...

Huh? Allow me to explain...

It has been eons since the oil in my car has been changed. Shame on me! The oil and filter were purchased at least a month ago and are sitting in the trunk still. Yesterday, "the estranged one" told me that he would change it for me, all that I had to do was switch cars with him for the night. I really didn't want to do that. I had places to go and his car is a disaster area that is always running low on gas. I told him of the errands that I needed to run, and he said that it was OK. He would stop by and pick up my car late at night after he was done doing whatever it is that he does until the wee hours. He 'd probably be by at around 1 AM, he told me. I'd only have to drive his car to work in the morning. He'd have the oil changed and the car back to me before I finished working. It sounded like a good plan to me, ao I agreed to let him do it.

When my errands were run I came home and took my CDs and coffe mug out of the car. I didn't want to accidentally leave them in the car during the switch. They are much needed items for me. I had to wait up for him to come for the car, He doesn't have a key and my key to his car has vanished. 1 AM came and went. 2 AM came and went. At 2:30 I gave up and went to bed. The S. O. B. never showed up! GRRRRRR!

Tired and pissed, not exactly the best way to be feeling...
